Black Ops 4’s Blackout mode is shaping up to be a strong contender in the Battle Royale genre. It’s easily the fastest paced Battle Royale mode out right now, and it’s been able to grab me by the nose for sure.
The mode begins with you, and your squad if you have one, jumping out of a squadron of helicopters flying over the map. You wingsuit down one to the battlefield and begin your normal battle royale gameplay.
Luckily its assortment of special ingredients spice up the normal formula. There are zombie locations, the mystery box, and aerial vehicles are amongst the changes. Each and every game has a lot of tension due to the small size of the Blackout map.
The map consists of a mish-mash of Call of Duty references, and if you’re a fan of older Treyarch Call of Duty games you’ll love the references scattered throughout. If you aren’t a fan though, don’t worry, the map feels like a smaller PUBG map.
Unlike PUBG though, there aren’t too many dull moments.
The small map allows the game to move at a rapid pace. It’s not too rapid to the point where you get exhausted playing it, but it’s just enough to where you won’t go too long without any action.
Blackout’s 80-person player count doesn’t seem like a limitation of the game rather than it seems like it’s actually a really good number for the mode. If they do decide to add more, which they said they might, it will be interesting to see just how much faster this mode gets.
Currently, missions are not available to unlock the characters, but when they are added your progression won’t be carried over to the full game.
Blackout has really surprised me. I’m not an avid player of Fortnite or PUBG, but this mode feels like it takes the best of both worlds.
If you’re a fan of battle royale games, this may be a hard one to pass up, because I feel at this point the only thing holding the mode back is the 60 dollar price tag on the game.
