Everyone’s hyped about Red Dead Redemption 2, but I’m still not convinced…

There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding Rockstar’s upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2, but I fear it may end up having some of the issues that plagued the longevity of Grand Theft Auto along with its multiplayer mode.

Today, many gaming news outlets are talking about the huge number of wild animals that Red Dead Redemption 2 is boasting along with the amazing amount of detail in the world. This is great and all, but a few concerning issues are also peaking out from behind the Rockstar curtain.

Many GameStop employees who were able to see the beta claimed that it was just boring, and with the scale of the world and some of the features touted in the trailers so far those claims don’t seem too far fetched. Another issue is Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiplayer model. Recently, Rockstar announced the mode as being called “Red Dead Online,” and that’s concerning as it seems that the mode will be modeled similarly to Grand Theft Auto Online.

While some hardcore GTA Online players may be excited to hear this, for many the GTA Online experience was a nightmare. There were extreme connection issues at launch, numerous behavior punishment system issues, and a painful amount of the “free” DLC was locked behind insane grind or Shark Card purchase depending on how deep your pockets were.

Not to mention Rockstar almost completely erased Open IV, a major tool in single player modding.

And sure, its all speculation. Rockstar could nail the multiplayer and it could be as fun as back when I was a kid playing Red Dead Redemption 1 online with my friends, but with Rockstar’s latest business practices I’m concerned with the direction this game could go.
