Machinima to shut down – laying off 81 workers in the process

It’s no surprise that the famous YouTube gaming channel Machinima isn’t what it used to be, but a complete shutdown wasn’t foreseen until recently.

About 2 weeks ago, the entirety of Machinima’s YouTube channel was purged of all its content. Not a single video was left alive, and not a single creator was informed that their backlog of videos would be deleted.

While the videos’ removal certainly came as a shock, no one knew how permanent this take down was.

Well after the most recent news, we know that Machinima is gone forever.

Machinima became part of AT&T’s Otter Media officially on January 1. According to Deadline, AT&T had been looking to align related digital assets after its 81 billion dollar acquisition of Time Warner.

WarnerMedia had already been shutting down DramaFever and Super Deluxe. When asked about Machinima’s future then, Machinima CEO Russell Arons said that she would, “evaluate what Machinima is and what our true north is.”

The 81 layoffs were enacted last week, and will take full effect on March 1.

A Machinima spokesperson stated that, “a select number of Machinima employees remain with the company, which is now actively providing services to supercharge the combined portfolio of Otter Media.”
