*UPDATE* CD Projekt Red clarifies their take on in-game religions in Cyberpunk 2077

*UPDATE*

Yesterday we reported on a translated interview with Cyberpunk developer CD Projekt Red. In the interview the topic of in-game religion was mentioned and CDPR was originally quoted as saying that in-game religions would be fully featured “even if they may offend the sensitivity of some.”

CD Projekt Red has since clarified the interview and explained that this was mistranslated.

Here’s the new translation –

Gry Online WP (English): You mentioned religion. Does it still exist in the Cyberpunk world?

CD Projekt Red (English): Yes, and in many forms. As I mentioned, our vision is somehow based on the real world. And religion is a very important part of the latter, society-wise. In our game we’re going to see for example Christianity and its different branches, or religions from the East.

Gry Online WP (English): Sounds controversial. Someone will enter a church to cause havoc.

CD Projekt Red (English): We do not want to avoid religion as a topic, authenticity of the world is what counts for us. Technically, the situation you mentioned is possible, but this is all about the choices made by the player. We won’t encourage the player to do so. In our quests, which involve religious themes, we make sure there’s no disrespect.

CD Projekt Red says that any quests involving religion will be treated with the respect they deserve and that they don’t intend to offend anyone with the included religious themes.

Players will be free to explore religion in-game as they chose to do so, and just like much of Cyberpunk 2077 what you do is your own choice.

The original Game Watcher article, discusses an in-game Christian faction, but the actual interview makes new mention of such thing.

Original article –

Cyberpunk isn’t shying away from anything it seems, not even religion. According to a CD Projekt Red representative, the team “will not avoid any subject, even if they may offend the sensitivity of some.”

According to the representative, they won’t tell you whether or not a religion is bad, but they will show you just how they function.

According to Game Watcher, Cyberpunk’s stance on portraying religions comes from a Polish interview with CDPR which has since been translated.

“Our vision of Cyberpunk is not to describe an alternative world but a continuity of our world. Some things will look like our current reality. For example, Christianity is present in the game and will even have a faction.”

It’s great to see Cyberpunk 2077 not withholding anything from the discussions that will surely be had within the game. It certainly seems that Cyberpunk will bring up some interesting questions regarding current and future society within its campaign, and the more we hear about the title the more it promises is in store for us.
