Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2v2 beta impressions – Classic COD returns

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is exactly what I’ve dreamed of for the Call of Duty franchise for years so far.

Sure, I’ve only played the 2v2 multiplayer mode, but I can’t describe just how much this feels like a modern take on classic COD.

What Infinity Ward has done has taken the best aspects of Call of Duty and turn up everything to 11.

The 2v2 mode is very reminiscent of Modern Warfare 3’s 2v2 mode, except players don’t get to use created custom classes. Each player uses an identical loadout that is picked at random at the start of each round. First team to 6 victories wins.

The mode is downright addictive.

Action is fast paced, the short time to kill brings me right back to my Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 childhood, and most of the loadouts give players a decent amount of tactical decisions.

My favorite thing about the mode is just how fast it goes by. There’s no wait in between rounds. You’ll see the final killcam (yes the classic final killcam, not the play of the game or anything like that) and then you’ll have a tiny 4 seconds before the action starts again.

It demands your attention and doesn’t give you time to sit back and get bored or look at your phone and I love it.

When it comes to the guns, Infinity Ward got it right again. Guns feel powerful, meaty, and metallic. Guns actually have an unusual amount of kick compared to the usual Call of Duty laser pointer guns. It definitely feels different from what I’m used to, but it makes the game feel heavier.

The sound design and gun animations are also hugely improved. Sounds actually have a very noticeable difference in different settings. Inside of metal containers the echo is loud and proud bouncing off of the metal walls. When in the open, the distant clash of the guns echoing sounds great.

The guns have also been upgraded significantly. Animations and models feel much more realistic than previous Call of Duty games.

It really is great, and if you’ve been craving modern military action and you’re okay with the classic Call of Duty fast paced feel you’re in for a treat.

As much as I really do love what I’ve played though, I’m still very weary.

When Black Ops 4 first released, I thought that its changes to the traditional mode were an interesting mix up. I liked the self-healing mechanics, the specialists were an interesting change of pace, and the long time to kill didn’t bother me too much.

It was a fun game. It wasn’t what most people think of when they think of Call of Duty multiplayer, but it was fun.

At least, that is until microtransactions and DLC full of rereleased content butchered what could’ve been a pretty solid game.

And that’s where my worries lie with Modern Warfare.

Although Infinity Ward has said there won’t be any DLC maps or season pass to pay for, it’s impossible for anyone to buy into the fact that this game won’t be milked for every penny after Treyarch and Activision lied multiple times about Black Ops 4’s monitization.

We’ll have to wait and see just how they go about microtransactions. If they go about it cleanly and don’t milk Modern Warfare, this could be the best Call of Duty in a long time. It’s an Activision game though, so it’s hard to think they won’t
